Home Fragrance and Candles: A Complete Guide

A well-chosen scent can completely change how a room feels — turning an ordinary space into somewhere warm, calm, and inviting. Whether you're new to home fragrance or just want to get more out of your candles, here's what actually makes a difference.

  1. Choose the right wax:
Soy wax and beeswax candles burn cleaner and slower than paraffin, releasing less soot and holding scent more evenly throughout the burn. If you're sensitive to strong fragrances, look for candles scented with essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance oils.

  2. Give the first burn time to work:
The first time you light a candle, let it burn until the wax melts all the way to the edges of the container (usually 1-2 hours). Skipping this step creates a "memory ring," where the candle will only ever melt to that same width, wasting wax and shortening its life.

  3. Keep the wick trimmed:
Trim the wick to about 6mm (a quarter inch) before every burn. A long wick burns hotter, creates black smoke, and causes the flame to flicker unevenly — a short, straight wick gives you a cleaner burn and a stronger, more even scent throw.

  4. Layer your scents:
Don't rely on one candle to fill a whole home. Use lighter, fresher scents (citrus, herbal, green notes) in kitchens and bathrooms, and warmer, deeper scents (wood, vanilla, spice) in living rooms and bedrooms. Burning two complementary candles in connected rooms creates a more natural, layered fragrance than one strong candle alone.

  5. Pair candles with a diffuser:
Candles give a room fragrance only while they're lit, but a reed diffuser works around the clock. Using a diffuser for constant background scent and a candle for occasions or evenings gives you the best of both without either becoming overwhelming.

  6. Match scent to season:
Lighter floral and citrus scents tend to suit spring and summer, while warmer notes like cinnamon, sandalwood, and amber feel more at home in autumn and winter. Rotating your scents with the seasons keeps a space feeling fresh rather than "stale."

  7. Burn safely:
Keep candles at least 10cm apart, away from drafts, curtains, and anything flammable, and never leave one burning unattended or within reach of children or pets. Burn for no more than 3-4 hours at a time to avoid the container overheating.

  8. Store candles properly:
Heat and direct sunlight cause fragrance oils to break down and wax to soften or discolor. Store unused candles in a cool, dark place, and they'll hold their scent and burn quality far longer.

A beautifully scented home doesn't come from one expensive candle — it comes from a few good habits: clean-burning wax, a well-trimmed wick, and scents that are layered and matched to the room and season. Get those right, and even a simple candle will make a noticeable difference.
